LOVE John Oliver but this piece lost me... a bit. I am not an anti-vaxer... vaccines have saved this planet time and time again. (I say, knowing that I will still be labelled as such). BUT, anyhow, this mass roll out surely has to be questioned. Dr Robert Malone... who has already appeared on, if I were to be particularly kind, Tucker Carlson's 'News' Show (cough)... is the straightest shooter I have experienced yet in all of this. It's not one thing or the other it's DATA... we don't have it. WE vaccinate pregnant women with a vaccine that has emergency certification and has NO long term trials as to how this will play out. Barry can get a sore arm and Mary can feel 'a bit off' but what IF... just IF these vaccines affect children in utero? NOT scare mongering, just asking?

The bit concerning fetal cells was misguided: What some people are really concerned with is the fact that there has yet a vaccine to be approved where none fetal cells were involved (Curevac has yet to be approved). True: None of the available Covid vaccines has fetal cells in it. But: Fetal cells are being used for either testing the vaccines (mRNA) or for producing vector vaccines.

No, the entire premise is stupid. What kind of deranged nonsense do you think being concerned over a fetus from 30 years ago is to a matter of immediate public health? Nobody actually knowingly cares about a child that never existed thirty years ago. It's all bull.

Therapeutics (that have been proven effective in places like India at the same time this broadcast is fear-mongering about variants) and innate immunity are enough to eliminate the need for risky mass experimentation with gene therapies. No thanks. Rich that you would bring up the Tuskegee syphilis experiment while simultaneously participating in a propaganda campaign to support denying sick people access to the therapeutics that appear effective at treating the disease. So how much does Pfizer/BlackRock/Vanguard pay your corporation to hit these talking points and gaslight your audience? It’s not an unvaccinated persons fault if someone else contracts a disease for which these vaccines aren’t even effective at mitigating transmission. The inserts only say “reduces moderate to mild symptoms of COVID-19.” This report contains lots of veritable misinformation, yet you seem like the kind of person who would celebrate a government program to censor people who disagree with you? You’re an illegitimate disgrace to journalism

I honestly don't know why we're so resistant to addressing vaccine concerns. If someone is worried about having an allergic reaction, why not allergy test them on the vaccine or the vaccine ingredients? If someone doesn't want a vaccine full of chemicals, why not offer a more organic alternative? If someone is worried about paying bills if they have to take time off for vaccine side effects, why not set up some sort of financial assistance program for people who don't get PTO through their employer? While there are a lot of people who will never be convinced to be vaccinated, there are a great many who would probably agree to the vaccine if their concerns were treated with empathy and respect. Why is it that we think that the only way to proceed with this is to force, manipulate, threaten and bribe people into doing it? We don't treat other medical procedures with this level of apathy.

If the vaccines are so safe and effective, why do you need to bribe the sheep with beer, donuts, burgers and advice from this Soy Boy? Truth is, flip-flopping Dr. Fauci from the start failed to convince the public. Why? Because he was in on it from the start. And his e-mails show that he was cozy with the Chinese lab that created this virus.

Incredible that he bring up the "well people die anyway so its not alarming that 23 people died in Norway after taking the vaccine." You can make the EXACT SAME ARGUMENT for people who die of Covid. Most of which are elderly or sick people. They were going to die anyway, right?

@josmc1 I love how big of a clown you just made yourself look to anyone who bothers to click your link.
seigeengine
seigeengine Prieš 5 dienų
@josmc1 Well, fortunately, deaths per year is actually pretty consistent normally. It increases year after year by a small amount, but there aren't really any outliers, at least in the last couple decades, in the USA, prior to the pandemic. Even accounting for that growth, off memory, there were around 480k extra deaths in the USA in 2020 compared to what you'd expect. About 365k official covid deaths happened in 2020, so that suggests the deaths are either caused by some other factor, such as delayed medical procedures, or official covid deaths are an underestimate. I haven't seen stats on the former, but I'd wager that while it does play a role, the majority of that gap is probably covid death underestimation, especially since the USA should have seen fewer deaths from many other causes, like influenza, since mask and distancing precautions also prevent flu from spreading, which we know happened, and, while it varies season to season, there are usually around 30-40k deaths on average per flu season.

@Mademoiselle Bubblewrap Could easily say that about many of the covid deaths. Do you know that they are counting deaths as covid deaths, even if you have a heart attack or youre 90 fucking years old with 17 underlying conditions, as long as you were tested positive for covid within 30 days of your death, you could even be run over by a car and theyre counting that shit as covid deaths. Yet with vaccines its "well were not sure" "they were perfectly healthy before they took the shots, and then suddenly dropped dead, but we dont have any real reason yet to believe its the vaccine" What a fucking joke.

@seigeengine Everything I just stated can be demonstrated. If you care to do the research, you can see it. Just in case you don't know, No one is making money on Ivermectin. Again, it is off pattent. Start with people with excellent qualifications who are none the less being censored.

ferniek5000 Prieš 7 dienų
@seigeengine Actually it has been proven in multiple small and large scale studies to be effective. It doesn't have to be a replacement for vaccines in those willing and able to take the vaccines, but there are lots of people worldwide who don't have access to a vaccine or can not or will not take one.. Ivermectin is low cost and off pattent, so it can be manufactured inexpensively almost anywhere in the world and help lots of people to live. Did you know that the vaccine manufacturers have refused to share thier pattented information so that it can be manufactured more widely? No profit in that. Herd immunity is established when the virus tries to move from person to person and cant find a port or harbor. Ivermectin can be a useful part of our strategy as a nation and the world to keep Covid from retaining a foothold in humans. Politics and profits should not prevent us from doing so.
seigeengine
seigeengine Prieš 7 dienų
@ferniek5000 That's irrelevant. Ivermectin has not been proven to be effective in any capacity, and if it has any benefits, they are certainly non-obvious and not a replacement for vaccines. The qualified proponents of it have stake in it. They're conmen, and you're promoting them. You're doing the same shit you did with hydroxychloroquine, and vitamin D, and whatever other BS.

Vaccines do not stop you getting a virus they give your body the best way of fighting it when you get it. Have you ever thought you were getting a cold but then it just goes away? This is you getting a cold that your body has the immunity too because you have had it before thus it knows how to deal with it. So you have caught the virus but your bodies defences have dealt with it and stopped you becoming fully ill. You are however still infectious until your body defences has seen it off. This is why you should still wear the mask, keep your distance and isolate if you have been in contact with someone who has been diagnosed even if you have had both doses. The vaccine can only work if you catch the virus if you catch the virus you will be infectious.

8:16 Don't raise inconvenient questions because you might get the wrong answers. You should instead say everything with certainty and conviction because the government declares it so. I am a propagandist. Honestly Jon, did you seriously rail on Tucker for bringing up fairly innocuous questions? Couldn't you have simply engaged with them rather than just mock him in an incredibly patronizing manner? I mean come on, you even admitted there was limited evidence that justified at least some of his arguments, just the CDC was being 'cautious'. Well it's a fair point to make that civil liberties shouldn't be put on hold just because some health body is 'cautious'. Imagine applying that to the justice system! Well he could be guilty of a crime, so we'll lock him up for a bit just in case. Oh wait, that's what all those terrible PATRIOT Act anti-terrorism laws were all about. It is an entirely fair and reasonable stance to raise questions about the vaccine and surrounding covid measures more than a year into this pandemic. Even more importantly, it is *key to your argument about vaccine uptake* that perhaps an incentive could be not having to deal with covid measures? Or not to have to where a mask? Just a thought. But to just mock him because you don't like him, or because he's said stupid things in the past or he's a conservative is to make it personal and degrade the level of debate. I know you're a comedian but many people take *your* word as gospel as much as any journalist. So please raise the level of debate.

i dont understand the premise of this show. is it "let's talk about serious things that impact all of us, but i'm a comedian and i'm going to make silly nonsensical jokes along the way but you should take what i say as fact anyway"? this dude is a clown.. why would i take medical advice from a clown.

I love how the same people who argue that they wouldn't take medical advice from clowns or celebrities took everything celebrity clown Donald Trump said to be factual and believed absolutely everything he said.

If you're stupid enough you genuinely just blindly trust TV hosts to give you factual information, you're the clown. What you're supposed to do is fact check things. In the case of covid vaccines, you should have done this a long time ago. Some nutters would rather look for the fringest nuttery to buy into instead, and for some reason we tolerate that instead of making you pay for the deaths and suffering you cause.

Whenever I talk to someone who is hesitant to or won't get a vaccine I say one thing-smallpox. Smallpox was eradicated because of vaccination. In fact because people got vaccinated and smallpox was eradicated we no longer regularly vaccinate people for smallpox. Many of us still-proudly-bear visible scars from the smallpox vaccine. Billions of people got the smallpox vaccine so now people don't have to.

Hi@Elias Crowe, I'm glad to hear that you are at least considering getting vaccinated. What other treatments and preventative measures would you like to see people focusing on besides vaccines for dealing with SARS-CoV2? Vaccination is a very effective method that has been in use for a long time. No, it isn't 100% effective, but then nothing ever is. As an infant/child I was vaccinated for both chickenpox and the measles and later in my childhood I contracted both so I am well aware that vaccines are not 100% in preventing illness. My infections were pretty mild and over with pretty quickly, I can't prove it but I would be willing to bet that the severity of my infections were significantly reduced because I hand been inoculated against both. My mother was born before the advent of the polio vaccine and contracted a mild case of polio as a child. Because of that she has had trouble with one of her legs her entire life. I'm not sure why you mention the efficacy of influenza vaccines as a negative thing. Influenza vaccines are quite effective in protecting large segments of the population from what could be a deadly illness. Influenza vaccine is incredibly hard to produce because from one year to the next we don't know which strains are going to emerge. Given all of the variables that go into trying to predict what strains need to be in each years vaccine the efficacy of influenza vaccines is pretty amazing. So far I have not seen any reports of known or possible damage that the SARS-CoV2 vaccine could do that in any way approaches the death and disability that COVID-19 is known to cause. What reports or studies have you seen? Is it possible that I might be harmed by a vaccine, sure, it might happen. I might also buy the winning lottery ticket and become a multi-millionaire tomorrow. Given the numbers that I have seen both are pretty unlikely to happen.

@colin j. I didn't know the J&J vaccine is not mRNA.. so thanks for that. I'm certainly not hesitant about those.. I am adamant. I may have one of those, maybe Novavax, but I'm far from being convinced that I should. Any road.. they really are betting the farm on vaccines. It might be that vaccines for SARS-CoV2 are about as effective as flu vaccines have been.. if that, and in some cases may do more damage than the virus. That.. and that this will be endemic with possibility of viral recombination.. very hard pills to swallow.

Hello @Elias Crowe, I'm not clear on the distinction you are making between refusing and choosing. The act of refusing something is a choice. Why do you have the word refusing in quotation marks? Are you referring to something that John Oliver said? To your question about the use of mRNA vaccines-it is my understanding that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is not mRNA based. I believe that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses the more traditional inactivated virus approach. I have not gone back to listen to the video again but I don't remember John Oliver saying that there are only mRNA based vaccines or that anyone has bet the farm on the use of mRNA. I do see that I could have worded my original comment better. I should have said that when folks are hesitant or are unwilling to get a vaccine because they question the efficacy of vaccination in general I use the example of smallpox to demonstrate that vaccination can be very effective. Thank you for helping me to see that.

Whenever someone accuses me of "refusing" to be vaccinated.. I tell them I am not refusing.. I am choosing to not be vaccinated with a very specific and new type of vaccine. Why did they "bet the farm" on mRNA vaccines.. instead of diversifying?

It really makes no sense that black people would be hesitant about the vaccine. The vaccine was not given specifically to black people, it was given to everyone, so the logic just isn't there

Clearly most pro-vaccine people are superstitious villagers. They've achieved a sort of social herd immunity: at least 70% of people share their superstitions and they are thus no longer distressed by symptoms of alternative thought. I've polled many people on their vaccines, and they seem to not have the faintest notion of what their data set is, what exclusions apply to their data set, not the faintest notion of the difference between correlation and causation, not even any inkling of whether vaccination automatically confers non-carrier status. These people are very dangerous indeed (and as a side note, their folly is fun to quietly, very quietly, lampoon. Living in a society of pro-vaccine ideologues is like enjoying a Monty Python film every day. Pro-vaccine people really don't seem to understand how silly they are. Crucifixion? Left!). The superstitious villager that is the average pro-vaccine person can't even seem to focus on what sort of evidence would falsify her or his conclusions. In other words, they don't really know in what their "pro" consists, so they don't know what a "con" or "anti" might consist in or of. If they're for something, shouldn't they know what they're against? They can't seem to focus long enough to understand what their thought system could be in competition with. They have answers without knowing what the questions are. And yet despite all this, I am not anti-vaccine. Nor am I pro-vaccine. The intelligent and wise amongst us will preserve her agnosticism on these issues till a great deal more evidence has accumulated. Vaccines are powerful incursions into the "sealed unit" of our flesh. We won't know the long-term effects of these things till...wait for it...the long term! Meanwhile the evidence continues to mount that is in keeping with our intuitions, acquired presumably during a half-million years of being human, that natural immunity is powerful. Practically a tautology! How else have we survived half a million years unless natural immunity has preserved us? I am, faithfully at your service, the very skeptic that the rest of you out there know, in your hearts, that you ought to be.
